Comic books have been around for sometime here in Thailand. Most comes from Japan, Korea or from Europe etc. When it was first brought in a lot of children got hooked to it and still is. Comic books seems to be harmless, but it can actually ruin our youth’s mind. “How?” you ask. Comic books also known as ‘Mangas’, has corrupted the believes of young readers to over spend their money on these books and created cultures of ‘J-teen’, kids who are into the ways of Japanese teens which are extreme in many ways such as sex and violence. In addition comic books is also wasting the time for children to study. It is not hard for comic books to change the ways of our lives.
Firstly, the subject of over spending. Comic books can go on for about 50 issues and each issue cost about 40 baht, so to have a collection cost about 2000 baht, there are lots of new titles coming out everyday and all of them seems to go on forever. The people who has to pay for all of these comic books are the parents and they have to suffer for the price because the children who are hook spend about 5000 baht per month on comic books.
Furthermore, comic books can have huge effects on children’s behavior. Comic books have explicit sexual scenes and the story is always about destruction and death. The level of gore and violence in these comic books is very high and there are no controls or regulations for children, so a kid about 8 years old can freely pick up a completely sadistic comic book where people get their head chopped off and blood spills at the turn of every page. Comic books also have sex scenes that exposes breasts and vaginas. So these scenes have cause early sexual for young children.
Even though, with all of these violence and pornographic can wreak havoc, comic books does also have a good side to it too. It could help small children practice reading and it can increase reading speeds for slow readers. It can also be enjoyable too. Some story such as the one for children can have good morals.
Although comic books have good qualities they can present problems in our cultures such as early exposure to sex or the high level of violence seen in these comic books. Comic books can be good and bad depending how you use it. As a result parents should be with the children when they choose comics, so as to see which one is suitable for their child.

Well, if you ask me, ABAC students should spend less time gaming and reading comic books and more on things that are really important. Things such as their studies, the current political situation, etc. It's fine that students enjoy their student time (God knows I did), but I think they should be more engaged in current political, economic and juridical problems. Help this country thrive!
